Accelerated Reader (AR)
Accelerated Reader is a program that encourages students to read. Students check out AR books from the school library and the library in our classroom. All AR books are labeled with a number that shows the reading level of the book.
Students are tested and given a personal AR reading level. They are also given an individual reading point goal. Since students are given time in class and are required to read 20 minutes each night, it is very easy for them to reach their goals at 85% or better.
After students read an AR book, they take a test on the computer. Some books have five comprehension questions, others have ten. Points are given for each test taken with a passing score. Points are accumulated throughout the grading period.
I send home a weekly report on Tuesday. Please sign it and return it to school on Wednesday. At the end of the six weeks, I will send home a longer report for you to see.
Students can earn prizes throughout the year.
